Air travel via Swedavia’s airports continued to increase in the month of October. Overall, air travel increased by one per cent compared with October 2023. This increase was driven by continued strong demand for international travel. International air travel increased by five per cent, while domestic travel decreased by seven per cent. At Arlanda and Landvetter, international travel increased by seven per cent and two per cent respectively.

“Demand for international travel continuing to be strong. Several airlines are investing in developing their offer of winter routes this year, including Norwegian at Arlanda and Landvetter, as well as WizzAir at Malmö. Demand on the domestic market has been weak, particularly in southern Sweden, which has contributed to a reduction in the number of departures available,” says Jonas Abrahamsson, President and CEO of Swedavia.

New routes include:
Arlanda – Hurghada, Agadir and Tromsø with Norwegian
Arlanda – Trollhättan with Västflyg
Landvetter – Hurghada, Tenerife and Marrakesh with Norwegian
Malmö – Bucharest and Iasi with WizzAir

More new routes will be added during winter 2024 in the airlines’ new air traffic programmes.

The trend for freight has also strengthened since the 2024 summer season as demand has increased and airlines have added intercontinental traffic.

During October, more than 2.9 million passengers flew via Swedavia’s ten airports. The number of flights in October was one per cent higher than in October 2023.

International air travel increased five per cent to over 2.2 million passengers, while domestic travel decreased seven per cent to just over 715,000 passengers. Total passenger traffic at Swedavia’s airports in October was about 83 per cent of pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

Sweden’s largest airport, Stockholm Arlanda Airport, served a total of just over two million passengers in October. This represents an increase of five per cent compared with October last year. International travel increased seven per cent to over 1.7 million passengers, while domestic travel decreased seven per cent to just over 306,000 passengers. In October, overall passenger levels at Arlanda were 91 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.
